The Government owned airline, Air Niugini, and its main competitor, Airlines PNG, are being encouraged to merge by the Government of PNG, with a view to making fleet rationalisation and cost savings which will, in turn, allow lower air fares.
The Government has set a time scale of three months to investigate and negotiate before a final decision is made. Air Niugini is the leading international airline, bringing tourists and businessmen to the the wonderful islands that make up this young, but growing nation.
As well as flying to the capital, Port Moresby from Brisbane, Cairns and Sydney in Australia, Air Niugini's international services include flights from Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Manila and Kuala Lumpur. Twenty one domestic airports are served by Air Niugini plus Fiji and heSolomon Islands with regional flights. Airlines PNG also fly to Brisbane and Cairns plus thirty three domestic airports.
Papua New Guinea is popular destination for bird watchers and divers plus hardened trekkers embarking upon the world famous Kokoda Trail (only for the toughest .. ed!). The economy of PNG has received an enormous boost since the discovery of natural Gas in the highlands with inward investment for the initial phase of the Project, excluding shipping costs, is likely to be around US$15 billion.
