Air Malawi is a regional airline, owned by the Government of Malawi, which affords access to this remarkable country as well as providing the main air link between the nation's capital, Lilongwe and the country's second largest city, Blantyre. Unusually for a national carrier the airline in not based in the capital but instead from its hub in Blantyre, Air Malawi operates a fleet of four aircraft on a route network including six destinations including one domestic destination, Lilongwe and four international ones: Johannesburg (South Africa), Harare (Zimbabwe), Dar es Salaam (Tanzania)and Lusaka(Zambia). Malawi is internationally known for the instant friendliness of the Malawians and Air Malawi has a slogan, "Africa's Friendly Airline" which is true to the spirit of the country.Unlike its near neighbours, Zimbabwe and Botswana, Malawi does not diamond mines and as such it remains amongst the world's least developed and most densely populated countries. Around 85% of the population live in rural areas and the economy is mainly driven by agriculture and tourism. To facilitate business traffic as well as international connections, Air Malawi offer early morning and evening services between Lilongwe and Blantyre. with many international tourists arriving in the country on one of the two services from Johannesburg into Lilongwe and Blantyre.
Air Malawi is a small airline with a fleet of only 3 aircraft, one is a French built ATR 42, turbo-prop with48 seats in a single economy class configuration and the the other two are Boeing 737-200 with 96 economy seats and 8 business class at the front of the cabin. These are not the most modern jet aircraft operating in Africa, as they are both over 25 years old but what is lost in age of equipment is made up for in the way that Air Malawi staff - both on the ground and in the air - try to make the passenger experience as positive as possible, A natural friendliness pervaded every flight and the airline's hot breakfasts are as good as any in the region.
Malawi is a special place, with unique experiences around every corner. it is a landlocked country with by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast and Mozambique to the south, southwest and southeast. As well as world famous walking safaris, the main attractions are the 365 mile long Lake Malawi and the world heritage site recognised Chongoni Rock Art Area. Malawi may not be the first country to choose for a safari adventure but for your second, third or even fourth trip Malawi’s national parks and wildlife reserves offer completely unspoilt wilderness and the absence of mass tourism.
Whilst 4 x 4 safari options are available (but don't expect to queue up to see the animals Kenyan style, in a posse of camera infested land rovers) it's at alternative types of safari that Malawi excels, particularly walking with expert guides and silent spotters; on horse back where the animals accept the slight intrusion a horse brings to their environment or the amazing boat safaris along the Shire river. This is a wonderful way to see the animals close-up as they are undisturbed by people in a boat allowing you to float close to the hundreds of hippos and watch the elephants drink just a few metres away. Lake Malawi offers more restful pursuits where modern resorts offer a wide range of activities including snorkelling, diving, boat riding, sailing, water skiing, camping and trips to the islands located along the lake. Plus don't forget the unique bird watching opportunities available throughout the country.
