Air Jamaica to disappear in takeover by Caribbean Airlines

Caribbean Airlines, based in Trinidad, has finally agreed take over take over terms with the financially troubled neighbouring airline, Air Jamaica. Caribbean is looking to operate Air Jamaica's seven routes and retain the airlines 1,000 employees. Air Jamaica's initial operations will continue existing routes. From Montego Bay, flights will continue between New York-JFK, Baltimore-Washington, Philadelphia and Fort Lauderdale. From Kingston, the airline will continue operating to New York-JFK, Toronto and Fort Lauderdale. Caribbean Airlines also expects to announce other routes soon. In 2007, the Jamiacan government sold the Kingston-to-London route to Virgin Atlantic, and last year, the airline laid off roughly 500 employees as it eliminated routes to Atlanta, Miami and Los Angeles. Local media reports say that The Air Jamaica name will gradually be phased out over the next twelve months.
